Google Earth!

Google Earth

Got a text from my Mom the other day. She said that I had to check out her address on Google earth. Apparently, as I was loading Simon into the back of my car, the camera car for Google Earth must have drove by.

New Job! I’m going to be a PHP Web Developer for Blue Acorn.

BlueAcornTrans

My dream of becoming a software engineer is coming true. I was hired by Blue Acorn to be a PHP Web Developer, and I couldn’t be more excited. My career starts next Monday 11/18, at their offices downtown. It’s hard to believe this is really happening, I was hoping to get hired by a great company, but Blue Acorn takes the cake. The hiring process was no joke though. I had to take 4 tests, interview with 5 different people on one day, and then a final interview with one more person another day. I was stressing out the entire time, but I got the job. I have to go through an intense training program now and learn the ins and outs of Magento, an open source e-commerce web application. It’s going to be hard, but I’m ready to conquer the world of PHP Web Development and become a master of Magento. If you have the time, check Blue Acorn out. You might see my face among the Team members soon.

Lowcountry Crossroads Website Launch

I am so happy to announce the launch of the Lowcountry Crossroads website. It was designed for the Colleton County Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse(CCCDAA) to provide service information to the community and to be a hub for their future ad campaigns. If you have the time, please check it out, and let me know what you think. I want to thank Ron Rickenbaker, Joseph Hiott, and Amanda Darden of the CCCDAA for their contributions to the website. They were so easy to work with and were quick to respond to my questions. I wish them the best of luck with their website. Lowcountry Crossroads.

Android App Development

Went to my first Android App Development class last night. It was at the Charleston Digital Corridor’s Flagship 2 building downtown. It’s a six week class that will teach the fundamentals of mobile application development on the Android open source platform. In the first class we got an introduction to the history of Java and the Android platform. We setup the Eclipse IDE on the classroom iMacs and went over some of its features. I’m still struggling with the nuances of Macs, but I am feeling a lot better about using them now. The class is full of high school kids from Porter-Gaud, and they definitely know their way around apple products. The professor, Cheryl Sedota, is very knowledgeable and she made us all feel very comfortable with the lesson. Next week we are diving right into our first project. I can’t wait.

WordPress User Group Meetup

I had an awesome time at the WordPress User  Group meetup last night. I attended Mannie Schumpert’s presentation on Advanced Custom Fields. It was perfect timing, as the programming was in PHP, which is what I am currently studying. I found it fascinating and I can’t wait to play with ACF this weekend. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Back to Coding

After a week off from coding I’m back to my studies. I was so busy last week with recycling and client meetings that I really didn’t have time to study JavaScript or PHP. Glad to say that I was able to get back into the JavaScript today and learn some more about how it handles events. Last week I was able to recycle 16 Windows XP machines and they are for sale now for $35.00. If anyone knows someone in need of a basic computer let me know. Here is a couple of pictures of them.

I had an awesome training session with Joseph Hiott and Amanda Darden of the Colleton County Commision on Drug and Alcohol Abuse. They learned how to manage the Lowcountry Crossroads website, and I we discussed what else needed to be done before launch. They are going to be practicing in how to use the site over the next couple weeks to make sure they get it all down. I am hoping to launch the Lowcountry Crossroad’s website after that. More to come.

Laptop Fan

The fan for the laptop I was talking about came in today and I quickly installed it. The new fan was a perfect fit and, aside from the incredibly small screws, I had no problem handling it. I’m always scared to turn back on a laptop that I took apart a week before and just put back together. Usually, something doesn’t line up or I miss reconnecting a cable, and then I have to figure out which one. Not this time though, all went well. The system booted right up as if nothing had been wrong. It was nice.
